Our client, a magnificent historic residence that hosts functions year-round, is looking for both a Lead Gardener and a General Gardener to join their dedicated team. This is a rare opportunity to take the reins of one of Queensland’s most prestigious gardens.
Nestled in the heart of the Darling Downs (3 hours west of Brisbane, 25 minutes from Dalby), the estate’s gardens are a living masterpiece. A spectacular avenue of jacarandas, lush vegetable gardens, and a stunning blend of tropical and native trees create an oasis that delights visitors and garden lovers alike. With an on-site runway for light aircraft, this opportunity is as unique as the location itself.
About the Role – Lead Gardener and Gardener (Horticulture Specialist). Reports to: Head of Operations.
Job Type: Full-time – flexible start and finish times to suit you!
Salary: 70k-85k (depending on experience) + Super + rental & relocation assistance + company vehicle for work use.
You will oversee the estate’s gardens, ensuring they are maintained to the highest horticultural and aesthetic standards. This role requires a hands-on leader who can guide a team, plan and execute garden developments, and preserve the estate’s botanical legacy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Horticultural Expertise & Plant Care – Maintain, nurture, and enhance a diverse range of plant species.
- Garden Design & Development – Bring creative vision to life through landscaping and planting plans.
- Team Leadership & Education – Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of gardeners.
- Garden Maintenance & Conservation – Ensure the estate remains pristine and inviting.
- Budgeting & Resource Management – Oversee resources, ensuring sustainability and efficiency.
- Reporting & Communication – Work closely with the estate team to align garden maintenance with events and seasonal needs.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with horticultural tools, machinery, and irrigation systems.
- Strong knowledge of soil science, pest and disease management, and plant propagation.
- Advanced understanding of plant nutrition, health, and environmental factors affecting growth.
Personal Attributes:
- Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving ability with a hands-on, practical approach.
- High attention to detail with a passion for maintaining exceptional gardens.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
A degree or certification in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of professional horticultural experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role. Expertise in a wide range of plants, including ornamental, edible, and rare species, is essential, along with proven experience in designing and maintaining diverse landscapes and plant collections.
